As a part of the month-long celebration of National Poetry Month, today is “Poem in Your Pocket Day”. According to the Academy of American Poets …”The idea is simple: select a poem you love during National Poetry Month then carry it with you to share with co-workers, family, and friends. You can also share your poem selection on Twitter by using the hashtag #pocketpoem.”
As you know, I am not averse to verse; I am a purveyor of poetics, a lover of lyrical literature. A rhymin’ writer, a … okay, okay. You get the picture.
So in honor of Poem in Your Pocket Day, I offer the following:
I’ve got something for you
You cannot refuse it
I’ve a Poem in My Pocket
And I’m not afraid to use it.
So if you comment here today
Thank you for your time.
Won’t you leave a poem for me?
Yours truly, in rhyme.

The Poem in My Pocket :
Touched by An Angel by Maya Angelou
We, unaccustomed to courage
exiles from delight
live coiled in shells of loneliness
until love leaves its high holy temple
and comes into our sight
to liberate us into life.
Love arrives
and in its train come ecstasies
old memories of pleasure
ancient histories of pain.
Yet if we are bold,
love strikes away the chains of fear
from our souls.
We are weaned from our timidity
In the flush of love’s light
we dare be brave
And suddenly we see
that love costs all we are
and will ever be.
Yet it is only love
which sets us free.
