BlogFestivus 2012 – Cupid

BlogFestivus 2012 – 243 words – 9 days – 9 Reindeer (wait, are there 9?)

Cupid lay beside Blitzen, his face turned toward the wall, sheet drawn up to his chin.

“What is it, Cupie? Is something wrong?”

“I’m…just tired. That’s all. I’ve got a lot on my mind.”

“It’s okay – let’s just snuggle”, Blitzen lazily stroked his back with her hooves.  “There’s always tomorrow morning,” she whispered in his ear.

Cupid tossed back the sheet and sprang from Blitzen’s reach.   He pulled her bra from his antler – tossed it to her. “What about Donner. Won’t he be expecting you home?”  The beauty of having an affair with a married doe was that he wasn’t expected to serve breakfast.  The stolen moments were quite enough for this buck, thank you very much.  He paced.

“He’s out-of-town. Helping a ‘friend’ with a business deal,” Blitzen snorted. “I can just imagine. That slut Vixen is conveniently out-of-town, as well. I tried to set up an emergency meeting, and she’s ‘unavailable’.  I know a load of doe diarrhea when I hear it.”

“Emergency meeting?”

“Yes, Santa’s getting out of rehab…the Sheriff has been nosing around, wanting to know where all the reindeer are.  Someone must have tipped him off.  Rudolph hasn’t been seen in weeks.  Then that ransom note.  There’s only 10 days till Christmas – we need a plan.”

Cupid continued pacing.   That last meeting of the Reindeer club had been quite the…well, the only word that came to mind was “cluster”.  Damn it.  They were running out of time.

BlogFestivus 2012 – Comet

BlogFestivus 2012 – 243 words – 9 days – 9 Reindeer (wait, are there 9?)

Comet slid across the barn floor – skidded to a stop and struck his best Tom Cruise/Risky Business pose. His right hoof held an imaginary mike – his rear left leg keeping time to the beat…”Just take those old records off the shelf…” he crooned. There was a loud banging on the barn door.

“What are you doing in there, Comet. Come on, open up.”

“Don’t get your harness in a twist,” Comet shouted. He slid the latch back and rolled the door open.

“Hey, nice get up.” Dasher quipped. Comet was suddenly very self-conscious in his whitey-tighties, button down shirt and socks as Dasher, Dancer and Prancer entered.
“Just practicing my karaoke act…” Comet struggled into a pair of sweatpants.

“Yeah, well, we’ve got bigger things to worry about,” Dasher said. He held out a note:

RANSOM

“Whoa! What in the name of Frosty’s feces is that all about?” Comet asked.

“It was left on the porch at the bunkhouse. What are we going to do?” Dasher asked. “The Sheriff has been asking lot of questions. Santa’s going to be released from rehab tomorrow, and we haven’t even had a trial run this season. No one has seen Rudolph since the last meeting, and…”

“Hold up, Dasher. No one’s seen Rudolph since Thanksgiving?” Comet racked his brain, trying to remember the last time he’d seen the ruby-schnozzed reindeer himself.

“No. We photoshopped that picture for the club brochure, but no one’s seen him. No one.”

BlogFestivus 2012 – Vixen

BlogFestivus 2012 – 243 words – 9 days – 9 Reindeer (wait, are there 9?)

Vixen left the gym and headed to the spa.  She had to work out twice as hard as her male counterparts to keep in shape, especially since her propensity for drinking the fellas under the table perpetuated her tendency toward saddlebags .  Between the training regimen for her annual gig on the sleigh team, maintaining her blog and cranking out stories for the local rag – the Arctic Circle, there weren’t enough hours in the day.  Unfortunately, none of those enterprises were lucrative – her creditors were getting a little testy.

With her hooves soaking and a hot oil treatment on her luxurious coat, Vixen sipped a lichen tea.  She wondered how she was going to come up with the rent money – the paper had cut her hours and Santa had threatened to cut staff since that red-nosed rabble-rouser had tried unionizing the elves.  She hoped her debit card could cover today’s spa visit – the credit cards were all maxed out.  Between the Pole dancing lessons, increasing costs for her high-maintenance look, and her love of harness bling Vixen was in deep deer doo-doo in the credit arena.

She held her breath as the receptionist swiped her card…and it wasn’t rejected.  She had ten days till Christmas and the next paycheck.  Time to reap the benefits of the plan she’d worked out so carefully.  She replaced the card in her wallet and smiled to herself.

BlogFestivus – Dancer

blogfestivus-2012

“Look, Sheriff,” Dasher stammered.  “I gotta dash.  I’m taking Mrs. Claus to see Santa over at the rehab facility.”

“Not so fast.  Which of your antlered friends is missing?”  The Sheriff tapped his finger on the photo.

“I don’t have my glasses – I can’t see so clearly.  If there’s nothing else, I’m outta here.”

“Okay, send in – let’s see, Dancer, I guess.”

All right.  Sheriff, just know this…Dancer is, shall we say, a little dramatic”.

Dancer slid into the chair, crossed his legs, tilted his head and peered at the Sheriff.

“I don’t believe we’ve met.  Dancer LeDeer.”

“Yeah, yeah…let’s get down to business.  What’s wrong with this picture, Mr. LeDeer.”

“Oh, my, well let’s see.  This was taken the night of the…oh, yes.  I remember this picture.  I was trying to get the club to underwrite the musical I wrote and choreographed, Rooftop Rhapsody.”

“Musical?”  the Sheriff looked confused.

“Yes, Sheriff.  I tried to get this project underway. Introduce a little culture.  There was, um, some resistance.”

“Resistance?”

“Yes, Sheriff.  Resistance.  Fighting.  Rudolph outright refused, Vixen demanded the female lead…Donner stomped out.  Blitzen – pure diva.”  Dancer’s eyes rolled.

“Female lead?”

“Sheriff, I’ve got to run.  Dance class over at the pond.”  Dancer pushed a slipping antler with his manicured hoof.

“Whoa.  Are those fake?”

“Sheriff, nothing is what it seems.  Including that crazy photo.”

“Are you saying this picture is staged?  What kind of polar poop is going on here?”

“Sheriff…I’m done here.”

Hey – It’s Baaaaaaaaack.  The Seven Deadly Sins Series.  A simple little writing competition, or the Dave and Lorna Show as it is affectionately called.

Simple contest – simple rules – see the guidelines over to the right.  Right there.

Some sources list “Pride”; some list “Vanity”.  You may use either or both.  Hey, it’s your entry…

I’m going to start writing my entry (which won’t be entered into the contest) tomorrow.  I hope to see your entry soon.  I’ll post the entries in batches as they are received.  Voting is done by an elite panel of judges, in conjunction with the submitting authors (judging by peers).  It really is a lot of fun.
